Document 7: Treaty of Niagara (1764)

The 1764 Treaty of Niagara brought together about 2,000 people from 24 distinct nations. Treaty negotiations had two primary goals: ratify the unilaterally declared Royal Proclamation of 1763 and bring peace to the lower Great Lakes following Pontiac’s resistance movement. The 1764 belt, and those that followed (replicas also shown in this photo) mark a distinct transition from the earlier belts in this module.
